Embracing toxic-free living in your household is a powerful step toward longevity and health, especially as demand for non-toxic products grows. Many common household items, like candles, perfumes, cleaning products, detergents, and cosmetics, release harmful toxins and microplastics into the air and onto skin, where theyโre absorbed, potentially disrupting hormones and raising cancer risk.
By eliminating toxic cleaning products, scented candles, and synthetic laundry detergents, and choosing natural fiber clothing like organic cotton, you reduce exposure to over 2,400 toxic chemicals, including PFAS and phthalates.
Opting for non-toxic household products and organic cotton underwear creates a safer, breathable environment, minimizes pesticide residues (conventional cotton uses 24% of global insecticides), and supports skin health. Though some choices spark debate, consciously minimizing pervasive environmental toxins prioritizes a healthier lifestyle for you and your family.
Cleaning Products
Branch Basics is my favourite brand of toxic-free household cleaning products. They sell a variety of cleaning sprays and detergents.
Glass Water Filter
Using a glass water filter system is important because it provides cleaner, healthier water without the risks of plastic alternatives. Glass is non-toxic and inert, so it doesn’t leach harmful chemicals like BPA or microplastics into your water, ensuring purity while being durable, easy to clean, and recyclable to reduce environmental waste. Systems like Santevia’s Glass Water System use gravity filtration to remove up to 99% of contaminants such as chlorine, lead, fluoride, and heavy metals, then add back essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium to create alkaline, mineralized water that mimics natural springs. This not only improves taste and hydration but also supports benefits like better digestion, energy, detoxification, and antioxidant intake, all in an elegant, sustainable design that cuts down on bottled water use and promotes overall wellness. This raises the pH for alkaline water, mimicking natural spring water and promoting benefits like improved gut health and detoxification.
Jolie Filtered Showerhead
Using a filtered showerhead is crucial for a toxic-free lifestyle as it reduces exposure to microplastics, chlorine, and heavy metals present in tap water. These contaminants can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled as vapour, potentially disrupting health. By filtering water at the point of use, showerheads help minimize these risks, supporting cleaner skin, hair, and overall well-being.
Laundry Detergent Sheets
Conventional laundry products often contain harsh chemicals like phthalates, dyes, and synthetic fragrances that can irritate skin, trigger allergies, and even disrupt hormones. These chemicals can also release harmful fumes into the air, potentially impacting respiratory health.
Silicone Cooking & Baking Equipment
Silicone cooking utensils are a superior choice to plastic due to their heat resistance, durability, and safety. Unlike plastic, which can melt or release harmful chemicals when heated, silicone remains stable and safe for use with hot pans and grills. They are also gentle on non-stick cookware, preventing scratches, and are more eco-friendly and long-lasting than their plastic counterparts.
Structured “Living Water
Structured water, also called living water, is water thatโs believed to have a more organized molecular arrangement, often described as forming a hexagonal or crystalline pattern. This concept stems from the idea that water in nature, such as flowing rivers or springs, naturally organizes itself through movement, like swirling or vortexing, making it more “vital” and bioavailable. Proponents claim this structure enhances hydration, nutrient absorption, and overall health, while improving taste and reducing impurities like chlorine odors. In contrast to “dead” water (stagnant tap or over-filtered water), structured water is said to mimic its natural state, with higher oxygen levels and lower surface tension. Devices like swirl pitchers (e.g., Mayu) use vortex motion to recreate this effect at home, often as a complement to reverse osmosis filters. Itโs a natural way to potentially enhance water quality, but results vary by source and use.
Shower Filters
Using a filtered showerhead is important because it removes contaminants like chlorine, heavy metals, bacteria, and hard water minerals from shower water, promoting healthier skin, hair, and well-being while protecting plumbing. Filtering chlorine prevents dry skin, irritation, vapour inhalation, eczema or acne flare-ups, and brittle hair or scalp issues, while maintaining moisture and improving lathering. It reduces soap scum, minimizes mineral deposits to extend fixture life, and environmentally cuts waste from bottled products. In hard water areas, they can create a spa-like experience with softer water that aids detoxification, respiratory health, and vibrant appearance.
Toothpaste: Fluoride Free (Boka)
Many conventional toothpastes contain fluoride, which has been linked to potential health concerns such as skeletal fluorosis and neurological issues.
Toxic Free Cutting Board
Avoid plastic cutting boards made from BPA or other harmful chemicals, which can leach into your food, potentially impacting your hormone levels and overall health. Opt for natural materials like wood (bamboo, maple, or walnut) or high-quality, food-safe plastic alternatives that are free from harmful chemicals. I use titanium.
Toxic Free Cookware
(USA / Canada)
Conventional cookware, such as non-stick pans coated with Teflon, can release harmful chemicals like PFOA and PFAS when heated. These chemicals have been linked to various health problems, including cancer, liver damage, and thyroid issues. Avoid non-stick cookware unless certified PFOA- and PFAS-free. I prefer to use stainless steel or cast-iron cookware.
