A Top Down Approach To Heal Chronic Gut Issues, Bloating & Indigestion
In 2020, my health collapsed. Years of pushing myself to the max in sports and entrepreneurship, compounded by a head-on car accident, a toxic relationship imploding during the pandemic, and launching two startups in one summer, left me in pieces. Chronic bloating plagued me, and I was losing vision in my right eye from a concussion. On top of that, the world shut down during the pandemic, and my conventionally trained doctors were useless.
For 13 years before that, I’d been a biohacking devotee, thriving in peak shape and loving life.
The collapse hit hard, but it was the wake-up call I needed. My body was begging me to slow down, warning me that unchecked stress could’ve led to chronic illness.
Through natural, holistic healing, I rebuilt myself from the ground up.
There’s nothing more empowering than taking back your health.
Today, I’m sharing the science behind how I healed my gut and transformed my life.
I’m not here to sell you a magic pill or some trendy cleanse. I’m here to tell you that your gut issues are likely motility problems—your food’s either stuck in traffic or speeding through like it’s late for a meeting.
And the root cause?
Your nervous system is hijacked by stress and a mindset that’s stuck in survival mode.

What’s Going On with Gut Motility?
Picture your gut as a conveyor belt, smoothly moving food from your mouth to its final destination.
That’s motility—the rhythmic contractions that keep things flowing.
It’s controlled by the enteric nervous system (ENS), a network of over 100 million nerve cells in your gut, often called your “second brain”.
When motility is on point, you don’t even notice it.
But when it’s off, you get hit with bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or worse, conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), SIBO or gastroparesis, where your stomach clocks out.
Motility issues aren’t always about what you’re eating. They’re often tied to your nervous system, especially when stress throws it out of whack. The ENS takes orders from your central nervous system (CNS), and if your CNS is stressed, your gut will feel it too.
Motility issues can come from several sources:
| Cause | Description |
|---|---|
| Nerve Damage | Neuropathy, often from diabetes or surgery, can disrupt ENS signals. |
| Muscle Dysfunction | Weak gut muscles, as in visceral myopathy, mess with contractions. |
| Medications | Some drugs, like narcotics, slow motility; others, like antibiotics, speed it up. |
| Infections/Inflammation | Chronic inflammation or infections can throw off gut function. |
| Psychological Stress | Stress triggers the sympathetic nervous system, stalling digestion. |
Stress is the big one here. It’s like the uninvited guest that crashes your gut’s party and refuses to leave.
In my 2020 crash, I was eating nutrient-dense meals and exercising daily, yet my gut was a mess.
Why?
My nervous system was stuck in overdrive from years of pushing myself as a perfectionist overachiever. Stress hijacked my ENS, slowing my gut to a crawl and causing bloating that felt like carrying a bowling ball.
Research shows that stress disrupts the gut-brain axis, altering motility by shutting down the parasympathetic “rest-and-digest” mode.
This is where my healing journey began—realizing my gut issues weren’t just about food but how my brain was wiring my body for survival.
So, how does stress mess with motility? It all comes down to the gut-brain connection, where your nervous system calls the shots. Let’s dive into how this communication highway works and why resetting it was the key to healing my gut, and can be for you, too.
The Gut-Brain Connection
Your brain and gut are in constant communication, like two besties texting all day.
This is the gut-brain axis, powered by the vagus nerve and other pathways. Your brain can tell your gut to chill or to brace for impact, and your gut can send signals back, affecting your mood, energy, and even how you think.
How it works:
- Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS): This “fight-or-flight” mode is activated during stress, slowing digestion to prioritize survival.
- Parasympathetic Nervous System (PSNS): The “rest-and-digest” mode supports digestion and healing when you’re relaxed, promoting smooth motility and nutrient absorption.
Here’s the critical piece: parasympathetic dominance is your body’s healing state.
In this state, your gut functions optimally, inflammation calms, and your body repairs itself.
But chronic stress and modern life traps you in sympathetic overdrive, like you’re running from a lion 24/7. Deadlines, bad news, the tax man, that one email you’re dreading— it all adds up, and your gut pays the price.
Your body is stuck in survival mode.
For some, this unconscious state persists for years, even a lifetime, preventing healing and fueling chronic illnesses like IBS or autoimmune disorders (JCI).
Shifting to parasympathetic dominance is crucial for maintaining gut health and promoting overall well-being and longevity.
Stress: The Ultimate Gut Killer.
Stress doesn’t just mess with your head. It hits your gut hard. Your brain can’t tell if you’re stressed about a deadline or a lion, so it pumps out cortisol and adrenaline, putting digestion on hold.
Your brain doesn’t know the difference between a real threat (like a lion chasing you) and a mental one (like worrying about bills). When you’re stressed, your body releases cortisol and adrenaline, putting digestion on hold.
When your brain thinks you’re running from 24/7 aka stuck in survival mode, digestion and healing are not its priority.
Over time, this can lead to:
- Slowed stomach emptying, leading to bloating.
- Increased gut sensitivity, making everything feel worse.
- Irregular gut contractions, causing constipation or diarrhea.
- Weakened immune function, increasing susceptibility to infections.

Root Causes of Stress: Trauma & Identity
But it’s not just the stress you feel. Much of our stress is unconscious, simmering beneath the surface from suppressed traumas and unresolved past experiences.
The uncomfortable truth: stress isn’t always the kind you notice.
Sure, you might feel the heat of a work deadline or a fight with your partner, but much of our stress is unconscious, lurking in the shadows of your psyche. It’s the stuff you don’t even know is eating at you—suppressed traumas, unresolved pain from your past, and personality traits that keep you stuck in survival mode.
As Dr. Gabor Maté, a leading voice on trauma and illness, puts it, unprocessed emotions like grief, shame, or fear can trap your nervous system in a chronic fight-or-flight state, even if you think you’re “fine”.
Personality traits like perfectionism or people-pleasing, often rooted in childhood needs for validation (like seeking approval from caregivers), amplify this stress. These traits, while socially praised, can sabotage your health.
This was my reality. Growing up in a lower-income family, I had a fun, seemingly carefree childhood. But in my 30s, after burning out at 33, my inner work revealed the truth: my identity was forged in survival mode. Despite my amazing parents, their two-job hustle left me without emotional support, so I became a perfectionist and people-pleaser, driven by a fear of failure. Failure wasn’t an option—survival meant pushing forward, no matter what. On the outside, I was unstoppable and seemingly strong—an overachiever dominating sports and entrepreneurship, eating healthy, and exercising daily. But inside, I was isolated, never asking for help, pushing myself to collapse. That unconscious stress, hardwired since childhood, kept my body in a constant “danger” state, wrecking my gut despite all my biohacking efforts.
This is why your gut stays messed up, no matter how many kale smoothies you choke down.
If you don’t get to the root cause, those hidden traumas, unconscious stress, and wired-in personality traits, you’ll never heal your gut. Diets and supplements are Band-Aids if your nervous system’s still screaming “danger!”
You must dig deep to rewire your nervous system and mindset.
Mindset and Longevity
But it’s not just external stress. It’s also how you think. Your mindset shapes your nervous system’s state, and your gut feels every shift.
A scarcity mindset (rooted in fear, lack, or the need to “be enough”) triggers the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), diverting energy from digestion to survival. This chronic stress disrupts the gut-brain axis, leading to motility issues, inflammation, and even dysbiosis, where bad bacteria take over.
My overachieving wasn’t just ambition. It was a coping mechanism from feeling I had to keep pushing to survive.
An abundance mindset, on the other hand, flips the switch to the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS), where healing happens.
The Identity Shift: Becoming Someone New
The most significant mindset lesson I learned was that healing your gut requires shifting your entire identity otherwise you’ll never break free from destructive patterns..
My emotional eating, late night snacking, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and overachieving weren’t just habits. They were who I thought I was. I pushed myself to the brink because I subconsciously believed stopping meant failing, and failing meant I wouldn’t survive.
That identity, rooted in my childhood survival mode, kept me in a stress loop, wrecking my gut. Clinging to it kept me stuck, driving me towards burnout. That part of my brain was hardwired from years of habit, and shutting it off felt impossible. I would find myself getting out of bed and walking to the fridge at midnight, reaching for food, even though I wasn’t hungry! I was in disbelief, knowing that my brain was hijacked, but I couldn’t control it.
The personality is not the problem; it’s the cost of the personality. – Gabor MatĂ©
Changing my habits wasn’t enough. I had to become someone who valued balance over burnout.
But by doing the inner work (therapy, somatic healing, and facing unconscious stress from my childhood), I let go of the overachiever who feared failure and redefined myself as someone who prioritizes balance and abundance.
This identity shift rewired my nervous system, restored parasympathetic dominance, and healed my gut. If you cling to an identity tied to scarcity or survival, your patterns will keep you sick.
Change who you are, and your gut and life will transform.
Kate’s Healing Blueprint
Like I shared earlier, my 2020 health crisis was a breaking point, driven by years of stress and overdrive. To heal, I turned to holistic practices that reset my nervous system and restored my gut. Here’s what I did:
- Whole Foods Diet: Switched to nutrient-dense meals with protein, fibre, probiotics, and fermented foods like kimchi to support my gut microbiome. I mainly cook from scratch at home and rarely eat ultra-processed foods.
- 90/10 Lifestyle: Majority good + disciplined habits while making sure to enjoy life, dance, party and never say no to cake!
- Daily Movement: Exercise reduces stress and boosts motility.
- Sunlight Exposure: Lifts mood and regulates my circadian rhythm.
- Journaling: Writing helps process emotions, release stress, and solve problems.
- Acupuncture and IMS: released trapped energy and tight muscles, activating PSNS.
- Meditation: Practiced 10-15 minutes of deep breathing or mindfulness daily.
- Therapy and Trauma Work: Worked with a professional to address past trauma, freeing stuck emotional energy.
- Gratitude Practice: Listed three things I was thankful for daily, shifting my mindset to abundance.
Most importantly, I learned how to slow down.
Life in my 20s was intense (but fun). Waking up at 5am to do 100km bike rides before heading to the office, where I’d hop into a cold shower. I’d hit the company gym for HIIT or weights in the afternoon. Ride my bike home after work, rain or shine, and head to hot yoga. And then going back home to work on my consulting business.
It was fun, but not sustainable!
By taking steps, I regulated my nervous system, healed my gut, and brought back my energy and clarity. It wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t a quick fix. It took years, but these sustainable changes ultimately proved effective.
For the last couple of years, I have had zero gut issues, including food tolerances, and I have completely rewired my mind and reset my nervous system.
Life will never be perfect, but now, I truly live in a state of abundance.
How to Heal Your Gut by Resetting Your Nervous System
Let’s go on a deeper dive to shift into a parasympathetic state:
Stress Reduction
- Meditation: Spend at least 10 minutes daily on deep breathing or guided mindfulness. I love the Insight Timer app for free guided meditations.
- Yoga or Tai Chi: These combine movement and breath to calm your nervous system.
- Sound Healing or Therapy: Use sound baths, binaural beats, or gong therapy to calm the nervous system. Frequencies like 432 Hz can promote relaxation and vagal tone, supporting gut motility.
- Nature Exposure and Grounding: Walk barefoot on grass or soil to connect with the earth’s electrons, reducing inflammation and stress. Time spent in green spaces further lowers cortisol levels.
- Biofeedback: Use devices to monitor and train your body’s stress response, aligning your frequencies.
Lifestyle Changes
- Exercise: Aim for 30 minutes of moderate activity most days to boost motility and reduce stress.
- Zone 2 Cardio (120-150 min/week): Maintain a heart rate at 60-70% of max (where you can still talk) to improve mitochondrial health and reduce stress. Cycling or brisk walking works well.
- High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT, 2 times/week, 20-30 min): Short bursts (e.g., 30-second sprints, 1-minute rest) enhance gut motility and resilience. Avoid overtraining to prevent SNS activation.
- Sleep: Get 7-9 hours to let your nervous system recharge. Track with Oura ring.
- Diet: Eat whole foods, fibre, and fermented foods like yogurt to support your gut microbiome.
Emotional Healing
- Therapy: Work with a somatic or trauma-focused therapist to release stored stress and trauma.
- Gratitude: List three things you’re grateful for daily to shift your mindset. I do this before I get out of bed.
- Community Connection: Join communities of like-minded people with a growth mindset, such as wellness groups or personal development circles. Your environment shapes you—surround yourself with those who inspire growth and positivity to reinforce a parasympathetic state.
- Journaling: Write to process emotions and gain perspective.
- Prompt: “What’s weighing on me, and what can I let go?”
Nervous System Hacks
- Vagus Nerve Stimulation: Hum, sing, or gargle to activate the PSNS and improve vagal tone.
- Cold Exposure: 3-minute cold plunges or end showers with a minimum of 30 seconds of cold water for resilience.
- Breathwork: Practice 4-7-8 breathing (inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8) to quickly shift to a parasympathetic state.
- Social Bonding: Spend quality time with friends or family to foster a sense of safety, reducing SNS activation.
- Pro-tip: stomach never eat when you’re in a bad mood (your body can’t digest properly when you are stuck in fight or flight).
