Ready for uncomfortable truths? We’re here to cut through the noise so you can make an informed decision about your own health because the government, pharma and big food aren’t going to save you.

If you wanna live your best life, you need energy.

You’re always tired or lack the motivation to sustain habits because your body isn’t making enough energy.

In the last article, we discussed the impending doom resulting from a cellular energy crisis, but fear not—there’s a solution to everything.

📌 Today, we will discuss:

1. A supplement, one of the hottest molecules in the longevity scene. This supplement will boost mitochondria function and boost your energy.

2. Kate's NMN Journey.

3. Why I Trust xLongevity.

4. Natural ways to boost mitochondrial function.

As a preface, I’m a HUGE fan of supplements, but it’s important to note that they won’t save you. They will “supplement” the foundations you’re strengthening that we cover in our free Longevity Masterclass: exercise, nutrition, sleep, social connections, and purpose and passion.

It will give you the energy to create those better habits for a full, vital life.

However, most people are NOT playing the supplement game right. I’ve had clients lament, “Katy, I’ve been taking the supplement for two days, but I don’t see any difference!”

Darling— you’re not supposed to “feel” the effects of a supplement right away. I’ve been taking supplements for a very, very long time, and I never “feel” the effects. The paradox is that the healthier you are, the less you’ll notice because change is gradual.

My Longevity Secret Sauce: NMN

As biohackers, we are obsessed with optimizing our well-being. I discovered that when I optimized for longevity, I am killing all the birds with one stone.

Forget the fountain of youth. We might have stumbled on something even cooler: a molecule revving your body’s internal anti-aging “slow-down-aging” engine (aging ain’t a bad thing!).

That molecule is called NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide), and it’s sending shockwaves through the world of longevity research.

But is it all hype, or is NMN the real deal for living longer, healthier lives?

📌 Benefits of NMN:

→ Supports DNA repair mechanisms.
→ Boosts NAD+ levels, vital for cellular energy.
→ Aids in sirtuin activation for longevity benefits.
→ Enhances mitochondrial function and biogenesis.
→ Promotes healthy metabolism and insulin sensitivity.
→ Potential anti-aging effects through cellular rejuvenation.

How NMN Boosts Mitochondria

NMN boosts mitochondrial function by increasing NAD+ levels.

Imagine the mitochondria in each cell as tiny factories. They are your batteries for living a long, vital life. 🔋

NMN acts like the body’s raw material (a precursor) to create NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a coenzyme involved in many cellular processes, including energy production and repair. It promotes mitochondrial and metabolic health, both of which are extremely important for longevity.

NAD+ plays a crucial role in the electron transport chain in mitochondria, a key step in cellular respiration, where energy is produced. Here’s a simplified breakdown:

  1. NMN to NAD+ Conversion: When you take NMN, your body converts it into NAD+.
  2. NAD+ acts as an electron carrier within the mitochondria’s electron transport chain. This chain transfers energy from food molecules like glucose to create ATP, the cell’s energy currency.
  3. Enhanced Energy Production: With more NAD+ available, the electron transport chain can function more efficiently, increasing ATP production and improving cellular energy levels. Our body needs to produce a significant amount of ATP daily to sustain energy.
⚠️ Disclaimer: Although studies on worms, mice, and even some early human trials suggest that NMN supplementation can boost NAD+ levels, the research on NMN's effectiveness in boosting mitochondrial function and overall health benefits is still emerging.

Why You Need To Supplement

What’s the big deal? Your body doesn’t have an endless supply of NAD+, and it naturally declines with age. Just like collagen, y’all should be supplementing.

📌 Kate’s NMN Journey

Before 2020, I was an energizer bunny-kat-squirrel who thought I was invincible.

Energy? I practically vibrate at this point.

Burnout? Never heard of her.

I pushed my body so hard that I didn’t burn out for 12 years—only because the universe decided everything had to happen simultaneously.

Car accident? Check. Toxic relationship meltdown? You bet. Launching two startups while battling a broken healthcare system during a pandemic? Consider it a triple threat.

2020 wasn’t my best year. Pushing myself for a decade finally took a toll, and my gut went on strike. It was a wake-up call. I began to double down on my health and went from an 80/20 effort to 90/10.

As a black sheep who never conformed anyway, I dusted myself off, tossed conventional medicine out the window, and healed myself naturally— all thanks to the power of habit changes, neuroplasticity, holistic nutrition, a robust stress-management toolbox, and a sprinkle of tactical supplements.

Speaking of supplements, that’s where things get interesting.

Most folks need them like a fish needs a bicycle. But for those of us who’ve already dialled in the foundations— we, the biohackers of the world, know supplements can take us to the next level.

Sure, if you’re currently living on a steady diet of Doritos and disappointment, you might not notice a night-and-day difference. But for those already on the path to vitality, that’s where the magic happens.

Going in 90/10

In October, I was with my friend Pierre, the CEO of xLongevity. We attended the Biohacking Summit in Amsterdam together and spoke about transforming our 80/20 routines into 90/10 as we strolled on the windy boardwalk.

He recommended me a supplement he’d been taking before it was “all the rage”— NMN.

Katy Poon x Pierre Sottas // xLongevity
P and I at the Biohacking Summit in Amsterdam, Buck Institute of Aging in San Francisco, and Stanley Park in Vancouver.

Why I Trust xLongevity

I knew the supplement worked because reading people and patterns is my superpower. Pierre walks the talk, and since his expertise is in testing and biomarkers, he’s probably one of the most tested men on the planet, next to Bryan Johnson!

When I met P, I thought he was some type of insane superhuman with non-stop energy. Makes sense with his multiple PhDs, Iron Mans, and insatiable curiosity. He even rode a heavy bike up a mountain in India on a hot day to prove his point. Lol. Personality-wise, I consider him my male twin— we’re also two peas in a pod (except his IQ is 10x mine).

The results I experienced were impressive:

→ *sustained energy *(this is a BIG deal)
→ insane mental clarity
→ no more afternoon slumps
→ shorter recovery times
→ decreased muscle soreness
→ improved athletic performance

I never felt supplements, but I felt the NMN.

💣 I was already mentally sharp, but now my brain is running on rocket fuel. Focus? Laser-like clarity? Crystal freaking clear. It’s like someone dialled up my cognitive abilities to eleven.

The food front? Let’s just say my willpower has become superhuman. Thanks to a combo of NMN, protein loading, continuous glucose monitoring, and time-restricted eating (because who needs all-day grazing anyway?), I’ve banished my sugar cravings to the deepest pits of dietary despair. Food used to be my Achilles’ heel, but now it’s a breeze. Maintaining a fasted state? Easier than dodging a dodgeball.

The result? All-day energy that would put my Chinese horoscope, bunny rabbit, to shame, recovery times that Usain Bolt would envy, and a mood that’s permanently set to “sunshine and rainbows.” Well, 💩 gets to me because I’m human, but I can bounce back from adversity real fast.

Basically, my high energy got even higher. 😆 Who knew that was even possible?

Real Talk: Full Transparency

Supplements aren’t magic bullets.

I can’t stand reviews that claim one product solved all their problems. NO, girl—that moisturizer didn’t clear your skin overnight, and that single probiotic didn’t eliminate all your gut problems. Please spare us the BS.

While NMN gave me an edge, it wasn’t the only factor in my experience. I also prioritize a variety of healthy habits that contributed to raising my energy:

  • High-Fat, Low-Carb Diet: Being fat-adapted means stable energy and living my best life.
  • Intermittent Fasting: This has become a regular part of my routine.
  • Prioritizing Protein: I ensure I get enough protein to support my body (1.7g / kg).
  • Daily Exercise: I’m active daily, whether cycling, running, lifting heavy things or walking everywhere. My ADHD also helps because fidgeting or non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) can burn up to 800 calories per day more than the average person.
  • Maintaining a High VO2 Max is important for overall fitness, and I achieve this by climbing mountains on my road bike.
  • Cold Plunges and Saunas: These are part of my recovery routine.
  • Walking: I choose walking whenever possible for errands and getting around.
  • Spending Time Outdoors: Fresh air and nature are crucial for my well-being.
  • Stress Management: Being kid-free and avoiding toxic relationships helps in this area.

Natural Ways To Increase NAD+

Before taking a supplement, it is smart to get current levels tested. xLongevity also has an NAD+ testing kit. If your results are low, a supplement will give you the boost you need. Although personally, supplementation is non-negotiable for me, there are natural ways to increase your NAD+ levels if you cannot afford supplements:

1. Exercise

Regular physical activity has a demonstrably positive effect on mitochondrial biogenesis, the process by which new mitochondria are formed. Since mitochondria are the cellular powerhouses responsible for ATP production, increasing their number could potentially amplify NAD+ synthesis.

Exercise, particularly low-intensity zone 2 cardio exercise such as brisk walking or cycling, is a potent stimulator of NAD+ production in skeletal muscle.

Zone 2 training optimizes mitochondria by allowing them to use fat, protein, and carbohydrates for fuel. Pushing past zone 2 leads to oxygen deprivation and limits mitochondria to using only carbohydrates for fuel, which is less beneficial. Training in zone two can increase the number of mitochondria per cell, leading to improved mitochondrial production and health.

💁🏻‍♀️ Kate’s Tips: my favorite zone 2 training is walking briskly up a steep hill.

2. Nutrition + Fasting

Focus on a balanced diet of protein, fibre, healthy fats, and strategic carbohydrates. This provides essential nutrients for cellular function. Avoid sugar, alcohol, seed oils, and ultra-processed foods.

Fasting, specifically time-restricted eating, can improve mitochondrial health, but the optimal duration is uncertain, possibly ranging from 12 to 18 hours. Fasting + nutritional ketosis may improve mitochondrial health, but the specific duration and effectiveness may vary depending on individual metabolism and diet.

Focus on sustainable fasting to achieve a healthy weight, as there is currently no evidence on the optimal amount of fasting for mitochondrial health. Choose a nutrition style that helps maintain a healthy weight rather than relying on the idea that one diet is more optimal than another.

3. Saunas & Heat Shock Proteins

Although the research on infrared saunas and NAD+ is unclear, there is evidence that infrared saunas positively affect mitochondria.

Infrared saunas use infrared light to heat the body, directly raising the core temperature. This can trigger the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs) involved in cellular repair and stress response.

HSPs act like cellular chaperones, helping other proteins fold correctly. Misfolded proteins can malfunction and damage a cell. HSPs bind to unfolding or misfolded proteins, assisting them in achieving their proper structure.

HSPs also shield other cellular components from damage caused by stress.

In addition, heat triggers a protein called FOXO3, which unequivocally slows down aging and extends lifespan. FOXO3 is pivotal in activating numerous genes crucial for essential cellular processes such as stress resistance, metabolism regulation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis (cell death).

💁🏻‍♀️ Kate’s Tips: combine saunas and switch cold plunges (contrast therapy) for extra benefits! But if you had to choose one, always choose cold over heat therapy for resilience building and stepping out of your comfort zone (where all things go to die)

4. Manage Stress

Studies show chronic stress exposure led to decreased NAD+ levels in the hippocampus (the brain region involved in memory). This decrease was associated with elevated cortisol levels. It also suppresses the activity of an enzyme called SIRT1, which plays a crucial role in NAD+ metabolism.

Techniques like meditation, yoga, and time in nature can help manage stress and potentially support NAD+ production.

💁🏻‍♀️ Kate’s Tips: Exercising outdoors is the BEST way to reduce stress— combining the two best medicines: movement and nature therapy.

5. Mindset

How you feel may actually drive changes in your mitochondria.

A study investigated the connection between daily mood, chronic stress, and mitochondrial health in human blood cells. They took 90 women, asked every morning how they felt, and in the evening, an even more in-depth questionnaire. They measured the women’s white blood cells during that week to assess their mitochondria health index.

People who feel more positive have better mitochondrial health, and how they feel will predict mitochondrial health (rather than vice versa). Interestingly, a positive mood at night is associated with improved mitochondrial health.

🔊 Positive psychological states may drive changes in mitochondria.

The Takeaway

My consistent energy comes from the combination of all these healthy habits. However, NMN gave me that extra edge and the boost to sustain my routine.

Starting Small for Big Results

If you’re struggling with low energy, a supplement like NMN can help you jumpstart your health journey. A little extra energy can motivate you to build better diet, sleep, and mindset habits. It all starts somewhere, right?

Kate’s Take
